Hard Clay Grading

Hard clay can demand a preparation step before controlled redistribution. Forcing a deep cut may increase traction demands without producing material suitable for the receiving layer.

Plan the surface handover

BeforeAssess dryness, clod formation and service locations.
Work stageUse suitable shallow passes or permitted loosening, then move and grade the workable material.
AfterFinish the intended layer when material condition permits.

What to verify

Inspect both the cut material and the receiving surface for large void-forming clods.

Material roles matter as much as surface levels. Growing medium, structural fill and pavement aggregate should not be treated as interchangeable simply because all can be moved by a scraper. The preparation and acceptance method must follow the intended layer.

Scope and limits

Rock-like or cemented material may require different equipment.
