Topsoil Grading

Topsoil grading controls the growing medium over an underlying formation. It should not be used to conceal a formation error that demands structural correction.

Plan the surface handover

BeforeAccept the underlying level and identify suitable topsoil.
Work stageSpread the growing layer with controlled depth and light finishing passes.
AfterComplete seedbed, planting or turf preparation.

What to verify

Measure growing-layer depth at representative high and low locations.

Material roles matter as much as surface levels. Growing medium, structural fill and pavement aggregate should not be treated as interchangeable simply because all can be moved by a scraper. The preparation and acceptance method must follow the intended layer.

Scope and limits

Topsoil is generally a different material role from structural fill.
